Prior to his arrival at UMM, Lee
served as an assistant at several
Division I programs and enjoyed
success at the high school level. Lee
brings with him experience in a
variety of Division I conferences:
America East, Big East, MEAC and as an
Independent. Most recently at the
University of Maine, Lee helped Dr.
John Giannini lead the Black Bears to
the America East conference
championship game. While at Maine,
Lee’s responsibilities focused on the
individual development of post
players, recruiting and scouting.
Prior to Maine, Lee served as an
assistant for Coach Kevin Johnson at
Centenary College (Shreveport,
Louisiana). During the 2000-2001
campaign, Lee recruited Andrew
Wisniewski, who became All-Independent
Player-of-the-Year and two-time member
of the All-Independent first team.
While working with the guards, Lee
assisted in the development of Ronnie
McCollum who led the nation in scoring
during that season.
At Delaware State, Lee helped current
Florida State assistant Tony Sheals
lead the Hornets to second-place team
rankings in all defensive categories
after finishing last the year before
their arrival. Lee had the opportunity
to coach two-time All-MEAC selection,
Andre Matthews, and assisted in
assembling a recruiting class that was
ranked #108 in the nation by
HoopScooponline and was ranked 1st in
the MEAC conference.
During the 1997-1999 seasons, Lee
served as an assistant at Towson
University (Baltimore, MD) for current
Florida State assistant and former
University of Maine and University of
Miami assistant, Mike Jaskulski. In
their first season at Towson, the
program went from last to first in
almost all team defensive categories.
The coaching staff also had the
top-ranked recruiting class in their
conference during the 1997-1998 season
according to HoopScooponline.
Prior to arriving at Towson, Lee
served as a staff member for Coach
Leonard Hamilton (later of the
Washington Wizards and now head coach
at Florida State University). During
this stretch, the Hurricanes advanced
to the NIT tournament. Notable
victories during the season included
wins over #7 ranked Villanova 61-59
and #11 Syracuse. The ‘Canes broke
Villanova’s 23 game home winning
streak and Georgetown’s 24 game home
winning streak. The team finished 6th
in the nation in field goal percentage
defense. Lee aided the staff in the
development of Big East Conference
Player-of-the-Year and first round
draft choice of the Miami Heat, Tim
James.
Lee also served stints as an assistant
at an NAIA school, Palm Beach Atlantic
College in Florida, and as an
assistant coach/assistant general
manager of the Florida Sharks, a team
in the USBL.
Lee coached at the high school level
prior to arriving at UMM and during
his college days. He inherited a
rebuilding task at Orono High and
immediately restored the tradition of
winning. It would be the Riots 1st
winning season in 5 years. Under Lee's
tutelage, Orono advanced to the State
Quarterfinals before losing to the #1
seed.
While completing his undergraduate
degree at the University of South
Carolina, Lee worked for Coach Gary
Fulmer at Lower Richland and Richland
Northeast High Schools. While at Lower
Richland, the Diamonds, on their way
to the state playoffs, beat teams
ranked in the Top 25 by USA Today. As
an AAU coach, Lee took his team to a
2nd place finish in the South Carolina
State AAU tournament and advanced the
team to play at the AAU Nationals in
Winston-Salem in 1993.
As a camp clinician and lecturer, Lee
has worked internationally in Belgium,
Holland, Canada, and the Dominican
Republic. He has worked at some of the
top summer camps in the nation,
including the prestigious Five Star
Basketball camps. Lee is a current
member of the NABC (National
Association of Basketball Coaches) and
the TABC (Texas Association of
Basketball Coaches).
Randy Lee is a native of Lakeland,
Florida. He is a 1995 graduate of the
University of South Carolina and
received his Master’s degree in
Education from Virginia Commonwealth
University. Lee resides in Odessa,
Texas with his wife Christine. Lee has
two step-daughters, Sydney 15 and Anna
13.
